HiSteve,
My name is Renee Parker, and I just got some of my work put onto papiermache.com.uk. I also had a chance to look at your gallery. I just wanted to say I like your style, and I could completely relate to the art school experience you described. I have yet to finish because the sadistic instructors that I dealt with gave me a bad case of burn out and made me question whether I even had any talent. I am now doing MY art the way I want to do it, though, and I'm happy! Anyway, glad to see other people doing it, too. Keep up the creative work!

Hey there Steve,

I just had to drop you a line. I really like your stuff. Especially the
large goldfish and the mosaic bulls head. Oh yeah also I really like your
"head butt" piece I thought it was very clever. Course maybe that's why I
make art and don't teach it. I'm somewhat partial to larger pieces
especially when it comes to paper mache. I'm moving into larger pieces
myself using paper mache. Been at it now for just about a year. But I just
don't work on it as steady as I wish.
Sorry I'm not interested in buying anything. But your work is very
inspirational. I just had to tell you Great Work!

Very creative work. Love the gentleman in the pub.

Would appreciate if you could help me out with working with balloons. I have  had success with applying layers of paper as well as having balloons collapsing  on second or third layer. What "glue" do you use and do you apply one layer after another or dry out between each layer?

Look forward to seeing more of your work on the wed.

Hello Steve,

First of all, congratulations with your art!  I really love the bull and the goldfish.  I'm just starting to try things out with Papier Mache as I discovered your work.  I was wondering how you do the mosaic.  Did you buy those pieces as mosaic or did you create it yourself?  I'm trying to figure out a way to create pieces to use as mosaic that I can afford but I'm not really succeeding (not that your's look cheap, not at all!).  Hopefully you can find the time to write me back.

Thanks!

First, very compliments for your works in paper mache.

I’ve seen them on The Papier Mache Resource website.

I would like to become as good as you are.

But I began to work with paper mache only some weeks ago.

Are you an artist or is only an hobby for you?

Do you know some book to improve the art of paper mache?

Thank you,

and compliments again.

You work is amazing, I especially like the butthead and the two old guy masks are seriously sooooooooooo cool.

I am very interested in paper Mache but I am unsure how to go about it, so it doesn’t end up looking like an elementary school project. I am working on an installation and am thinking about making a white wolf, or dog. When you painted the bull head did you use acrylic paint or gesso or oil paint.

Any tips you have for me would be greatly appreciated, like what is pulp and how to you make it or where do you buy it?

Thank you so very much,

A desperate art student,

Hi,

I was just looking at the model of the goldfish you have done which is absolutely fantastic!

This is a bit of a cheeky email because I'm looking for a bit of guidance if possible.  I'm running an activity weekend for kids in a couple of months time based around the nature reserve that I work on.  As part of this I was hoping to make a giant natterjack toad that the kids could all add a bit of newspaper to.  However, I have no idea where to start, did you start with a chicken wire frame?  That was my general plan, do you think that it needs to be reinforced with a stiffer wire 'skeleton'? and is there a maximum size before it all starts to fold in on itself?

I'd really appreciate any hints/tips you could give.

Thank you in advance for your time in reading (and hopefully answering) my email.

Best wishes
Claire

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to drop a line and thank you for a great website!  I am learning how to mosiac, and sometimes while enjoying my morning coffee I will do some surfing to see what others have done.  I'm 37, and have no official training in any field of art, but I have always felt I could do something, and that I could do it well!  I'm not sure that anything I've done so far is that great, but I like it.  Thankfully my husband likes it too, and is very supportive.

At any rate, I absolutely love your work.  (particularly the fish, but the headbutt is also great!) Thanks for adding your life story as well - not only is it quite interesting, but very inspiring!

Caught your web site while looking for a photo of a JOhn Dory because I wanted to mosaic one... WOW - your stuff is amazing. I was going to use a pottery slab as a base as I'm not good with MDF & jig saws, but what I have just seen has blown me away. I don't think I'll attempt the 3D stuff, but you keep up the good work!
Your garden studio looks great by the way, do all gardens in Streatham look that exotic? (I lived in Catford, Lewisham & Brockley between '91 & '99 & now live in New Zealand...)

I was at work, deseperatly trying to find something to pass the hours... and I went on the BAMM website to browse at different links and I found your address.
I wanted to tell you that I think your mosaic work looks quite cool and imaginative.
I have a question though...you are using papier maché technics for your mosaic base and its something I want to try. I have used wire and plaster to built a form but I didnt use papier maché because I was thinking that it wouldnt last (in exterior for exemple). Is there something special (like a glue or varnish) that you must lay on it to keep it from damp and wet weather ? and when you grout it, doesnt it make the base too "soft" ?
I hope you can understand my english (I'm french).
Have a nice day,

Mireille

Hi Steve,

Would have left this message in your guest book but couldn't find where to post it. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed viewing your work and can commiserate with your art college frustrations. Sadly though, I feel there may always be a slight snobbery that excludes any artistic talent that doesn't carry at least a BA in art & design.
As my CV reflects a career path in psychiatry, I know how hard it is to establish oneself in the art industry if you haven't been to this academy or that one, but being naturally stubborn and never being one to walk away from a challenge... I shall keep battling. I hope you do too.

Hello Steve,

I was reading your bio on your website, and was surprised that your journey seems to be similar to my own. Especially the statement regarding people who don't think they are "artistic". I studied at an art school for three years before getting married in '83 and now, 23 years later, I'm ready to get back to work. Art has been a life-saving, constant presence in my life and I want to share it with those who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity due to the exclusiounist attitude many of today's artists and galleries would like to project. It irritates me that the perception they want is that art is for the affluent and artists must have an MFA at least to be seriously considered.

I just recently was introduced to the world of mosaic art through a satellieite course offered by the Art Institute of Chicago and am hungy for more. Our instructor was Karen Ami from the Chicago Mosiaic School and I am hooked! I think your work is awesome and the medium perfect to portray the shimmering quality of fish under water. Good luck and keep up the good work!
